almost / off is an exhibition of sculpture by Liam Coughlin
For almost / off, Waltham-based artist Liam Coughlin created a new series of sculptures that are rooted in location. Drawing inspiration from the town of Harvard’s history of Shakerism, Coughlin utilized various Shaker design practices to create austere structures, including a precise attention to craftsmanship as he retooled wood sourced directly from the Greenhut property. The historical methods of construction utilized by Coughlin are then complicated by contemporary concerns, including Thing Theory, memes, and semiotics.
Coughlin’s sculptures and interventions explore themes of perception, taste, humor, and materiality. The work in this exhibition is united by an interest in creating uncanny experiences, all of which take familiar objects and shapes that share a sense of “offness.”
Please join us for the opening reception on October 30, 5:00 - 7:00pm. Light refreshments will be served including hot beverages.
The exhibition is open by appointment only 10/31-11/21. Please contact dana@greenhutresidency.org to schedule a viewing.
